Chapter 26: Sheriff Bazilla
The meeting was held in a natural amphitheater in the forest, lined with rolling mounds of earth that worked perfectly as benches. The rebels were mostly Enonites, except for the small cluster of Andorans in one corner. Trinnia spotted Saroset, the only purple guy in the crowd, and headed his way.
“So many of them are bandaged up,” Puk said. “Are the Andorans also with the Brimstone Company?”
“Yeah, from the second crew. The Korba were waiting for them at the port, and stole their trucks. Most of crew were lucky to escape with the clothes on their backs. That was when the rebels found them.”
“If there are Korba in Jornok, why don’t the Enonites just arrest them?” Puk asked.
“Because the Enonites aren’t in charge there anymore, the Korba have taken over and are kidnapping anyone who comes into the city,” Trinnia said. “Someone said it's been that way for a week. Enon is in trouble.”
A hush fell over the crowd as a battle-scarred Enonite woman hobbled onto the center stage, leaning on a cane. Puk looked closer at the cane and realized it was actually a hammer with a hatchet blade forged into one side, and that one of the woman’s legs was a crude metal contraption from knee to ankle. A patch covered one eye, and her hair was cut short on the sides, tied in the back.
“Countrymen and allies, welcome to the fight. I am Sheriff Bazilla Samona, veteran of two civil wars and three large-scale border conflicts with the Korba.” She held up three fingers on her free hand--the only fingers on that hand, which was dark with burn scars.
“Yikes, she's a toughie,” Puk whispered.
